Send Kids Back to School with Allergy AwarenessIf your child has asthma, or some other issue such as allergies, you need to make sure that there is some kind of program in place when he or she goes back to school so that the school knows what to avoid and what to do in case of an allergic reaction. Below are some steps you can take to make sure that your children are safe at school regardless of their allergies.
- Invest in allergy bracelets. Allergy bracelets are an easy way for your child to remind those around him or her that there is a potential for an allergic reaction. You may have already let the school know this, but sometimes information gets lost or overlooked, so your child needs something on them at all times that will identify an allergen issue. This is especially appropriate for young children who may not know their allergies, or for children whose reaction is so severe they are unable to talk.
- Leave an emergency kit with the teacher, as well as the nurse. The teacher is not supposed to administer medication, but if the allergic reaction is severe enough, they should have it on hand. The nurse may be hard to locate or out of the building temporarily, and you want to make sure you have taken all precautions. The medication should be unopened and clearly labeled, so that there is no question of who it belongs to or what to do with it. In the case of a teacher, you may also want to provide a locked bag to put the medication in for safety.
